Title: The Testament of Beauty Author: Robert Bridges Published: 1929. Clarendon Press First edition/sixth impression (SIXTH EDITION). Hardback with dust wrapper not price-clipped, showing Price 7s. Net; signed and dated Christmas Eve. , with short inscription, by the author and his wife to half-title page; also includes an addressed envelope, with franked stamp (dated 23 Dec 1929), containing a short letter (with same date) from Robert Bridges, in his own handwriting, signed by Robert Bridges and with a short addendum and signature by his wife; covered in clear, removable protective wrapper. Very Good/Very Good: book has a little wear at head & foot of spine, a few small spots to boards, offsetting to front free endpaper & pastedown, internally clean & unmarked, envelope adhered to rear free endpaper; dust wrapper has a little chipping and paper loss at head of spine, mid-spine, inside flap fold corners, rubbing and creasing to spine, a few small marks to rear panel. Quite a unique piece of literary, and Nobel Laureate, history. A first edition, sixth impression, of The Testament of Beauty by former Poet Laureate Robert Bridges. This was one of his very latest works, first published in 1929, one year before his death at the age of 85. For this long philosophical poem Bridges received the Order of Merit. This copy is signed, dated (‘Christmas Eve 1929′) and dedicated by Robert Bridges on the half-title page. Also, secreted at the very back of the book, attached to the rear pastedown & half-hidden by the rear inside flap, is an envelope. Within this blank envelope is an addressed envelope, with franked stamp (dated 23 Dec 1929), and this envelope contains a short letter (same date) from Robert Bridges. The letter is addressed to “Mrs Pearce”, and, inside, to “Peggy”. The dedication on the half-title page is also to “Peggy”. Both dedication and letter appear also to have been signed by Robert Bridges’ wife, Monica. There was a silent film actress called Peggy Pearce, around at this time; but, as far as I can tell, she never lived in Britain.
