1944 Handwritten Letter Private Carl Furillo Dodgers Signed To Branch Rickey WOW
Offered is a 1944 Pre Rookie Military letter from Private Carl Furillo to Branch Rickey! In 1942 Carl moved up to Montreal of the International League and batted. He was the second youngest player on the team, and the most prominent future major leaguer on the Clyde Sukeforth-managed squad. The Army called, and Furillo missed the next three seasons. He served in combat in the Pacific Theater, received three battle stars, and was wounded. Peter Golenbock says in his book. That Furillo turned down a Purple Heart medal for his wounds, saying he hadnt been sufficiently valiant. I’ll attempt to dictate the letter here a few of the words are a bit difficult to read. Dear Branch, I received you letter and I wrote to Doc Wilson right away in fact the same day. But I just received the letter back. The letter was unclaimed. It looks as if I’m licked and so are you. But I really wish I could find him. I’m really suffering with my head and back. If you get any news let me know where he’s at right away. Or if you see him. Try your best to get in touch with him because the time is short. If you get what I mean. I don’t expect to be on this (sid)? The longest I’ll be over here is till spring. So you see why I want to get Doc. I tried to get in touch with him for over a year already and still don’t know where he’s at. Well Branch, If you don’t hear from him I wish you and your father all the luck in the world. Say Hello to Frisco (Thomson)? Yours Truly Carl Furillo. Answer if you find any news. Comes with envelope PVT Carl Furillo San FranciscoIncredibly rare and unique correspondence form two of the most legendary Dodgers of all time! When Carl was still a minor leaguer!
