1894, 2 Vol, History of the Navy, ES Maclay, 2 HANDWRITTEN MACLAY SIGNED LETTERS
The 2-Volume set is fully titled, A History of the United States Navy from 1775 to 1893, authored by Edgar Stanton Maclay, FIRST EDITION published by Appleton in 1894. The books are in FAIR TO GOOD CONDITION – more details on the condition below. WHAT IS SPECIAL HERE IS THAT THERE ARE TWO HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTERS IN THE BOOKS BY AUTHOR EDGAR STANTON MACLAY. One is laid into Volume 1 – glued to the first free yellow endpaper in front of Volume 1. Over time, this laid in letter, the yellow endpaper leaf, and one additional leaf which has the frontispiece, has become detached from the binding. The letter is on “History of the United States Navy” letterhead, also citing the “Tribune Building” where the author works. This first letter is dated Sept 27, 1894, and reads with?? Where I can’t make out the text: My dear Mr. It is a work that every man should have in his library if he is at all interested in America. Trusting for a favorable reply from you and hoping to have the pleasure of meeting you at the office of Messrs Stray & Spear on Monday morn, ??? Respectfully Yours, Edgar S. The second letter was loose in the book, dated March 15, 1898, and reads: My dear Sir, I thank you very much for your kind letter. If there is any good fortune at all about my loss it is that it has shown me how many kind friends I have. Many more than I really suffered. I have decided to up my??? Here just as soon as I can get a fairly reasonable price. If you hear of a customer please keep me in mind. Respectfully yours, Edgar S. NOTE IMPORTANTLY that the second letter has the name “Ackerly” bottom left hand corner, implying what I believe is that Ackerly is the intended recipient of this second letter. He was also the recipient of the first letter. ALSO NOTE that the first Volume containing the introductory laid in letter also has affixed behind the front board a newspaper article describing the fire and destruction of “Old Fied Inn” owned by Edgar Stanton Maclay, and a hand-inked date on this article of March 5, 1898, only 10 days before the letter noted above discussing Maclay’s “loss”. So, in short, while the books themselves have value, maybe of more interest and maybe more interesting… Is this side story of the author and his friendship with the original book owner, “Ackerly”. Then in 1898 Ackerly contacted Maclay when he heard of his misfortune in losing a property to fire. I will note that there is another signed Maclay letter that can be seen online by Googling Edgar S. Maclay signed letter” and being sent to “Maclay’s Case on a Presidential Repository site. It is typed, but it is hand-signed by Edgar Maclay, and the handwriting there matches that seen in these letters. The letters are legitimate and do tell an interesting side story to go with the books. I would grade the books as FAIR TO GOOD. There is wear and tearing top and bottom of the spine of both books, and moderate to heavy corner wear, light edge wear to boards. The back endpapers were cracked in both books and I did affect a glue repair for those. The text book is solid, but there were a few frayed pages suggesting they were disbound and glued back in by a previous owner. The page tops were gilt, there was no markings, all figures were present, no moisture impacts. 577 pages in Volume 1 followed by three pages of publisher ads, and 640 pages in Volume 2 (no ads, ending in the Index). Finally, not shown in the listing photo, there were a small number, about 6, individual newspaper clippings found in the pages leaving a newspaper stain where they were stored. The clippings did not appear associated with the books or the author. I have included them in a separate sleeve in case they may be of interest.
